River kayaker dies after being swept away
Mark Hilliard

Last Updated: Thursday, November 13, 2014, 23:29
A kayaker was killed yesterday when he was swept away in heavy river water swelled by intensive rainfall.

The incident occurred on the River Inchavore near Lough Dan yesterday afternoon where the unnamed man had been with about six other kayakers.

It is understood the severe weather played a contributing role in his death, the rain swelling the river and causing its speed to increase.

The man was swept away and was later recovered in an unconscious state when efforts were made to resuscitate him.

After the alarm was raised, the coastguard dispatched a helicopter to the area and took the man and two others, not thought to be injured, to Tallaght Hospital.

The Inchavore is a popular spot for kayaking.

A description of the river notes the pace and volume of water increasing in parts, an aspect that would have been aggravated by yesterday’s weather.

Kayaker feared dead after accident during mountain excursion

A kayaker is feared dead after an accident during an excursion in the Wicklow Mountains today.

A group of five kayakers braved the wild weather today to take advantage of the rapids in the Inchavore Valley in the mountains.

However the group got into difficulty and it is thought that one man’s boat capsized.

He was left then unconscious underwater for around 45 minutes, according to a spokesperson for the Dublin coastguard.

Members of his group and two other people who are not believed to have been part of the same group, searched for the man in the fast flowing water near the Lough Dan area of the mountains.

Eventually he was pulled from the water and one of his fellow kayakers performed CPR on the distressed man for 15 minutes before rescue services arrived on-scene.

He was winched from the scene and taken to Tallaght Hospital. At least three distress calls were made to the Dublin Coastguard at around 3.50pm today - some of from English mobile numbers. Parts of the river are unnavigable unless there is large amounts of water.

Rescue Helicopter Rescue 116 was dispatched from Dublin airport to locate the group and arrived on-scene within half an hour.

Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue were also called to the scene and arrived with newly trained swift water technicians. Gardai were also notified of a missing person in the area as is the regular procedure.

Light was beginning to fade when the rescue helicopter managed to locate the distressed group when they spotted people along the riverbank.

Three casualties in total were winched from the scene at 4.50pm. It’s thought that the other two were not suffering from shock and perhaps hypothermia. The remaining four people stayed on the ground because they were uninjured.

CPR was performed on the man during to Tallaght hospital. A spokesperson for the hospital was not in a position to comment on his condition.
