Are you planning on attending the ICU AGM? Some advice...

Post by Seanie » Sun Nov 13, 2011 11:46 pm

What: ICU AGM
When: 11 O Clock Saturday, November 26th, 2011
Where: Clarion Hotel, Liffey Valley Dublin 22

More often than not decisions and outcomes happen before a meeting even takes place. Meetings are just a formality. This should not be the case. If you are prepared and know how things work you can prevent this from happening:

1. Know the game
Read the ICU's governance document. Pay particular attention to the section 'Annual Delegate Meetings,' which starts on the 25th page.

2. Bring reference material
Print out and bring the ICU's governance document and this years published accounts (soon to be circulated).
[As the documents become available they will uploaded to the IWW Wiki]

3. Be heard
Stand your ground. Say what you have to say. It's a Delegate Meeting and General meeting, so you have a right to be heard. Reject any statements that sound like "we've heard enough of...." or "I think you have had your say...." Both statements are thinly veiled attempts to stop you from being heard.

4. Prepare your points
The ICU will circulate the motions for the upcoming AGM before the meeting. Discuss and familiarise yourself with them in the days and weeks before the AGM.

5. Back the right horse
Contact the people running for the executive board. They are often more than willing to discuss the issues you find important.

6. Gauge support
Contact other clubs and other ICU members and ask them what they think of the motions and nominees.

7. Stack the deck in your favor
Encourage as many of your friends as possible to attend the AGM. Even if they can't vote, don't underestimate the power of a friendly crowd. Often the vocal (and old) minority dictates the pace and the agenda at ICU AGM's.

8. Improved future meetings
Take notes and post them on a website like this. It will help you remember the meeting and the promises that were made. But most importantly it will bring more like minded people into the organisation.

Do you have any tips that you would like to share?

Just to say that if you are a member of the ICU or an afiliated club your opinion does count, whether it's critical (hopefully constructively) or not.

There seems to be a cohort of people out there who would seek to suggest that unless you put yourself forward to be elected you are not entitled to your opinion. You are, that's what being a member is about.
