We're in the run up to New years in Kerry. So I've been adding Google maps and finding coordinates for river put-in.

There have been 15 rivers submitted for Kerry (thanks). But we're still missing some river guides for the area:
  • the Cleady
  • the Carabeg
  • the Feoghanah
  • the Kerry Blackwater
  • the Ballaghisheen (done)
  • the Emlagh
  • the Owenreagh
If you know any of them please add a guide here.

Check out the Google Map of rivers in Kerry:

We had a run of sorts with a board surfer in St. Finian's Bay last year, tony cut him off on a wave completely by accident, he said nothing about it to Tony out on the water. But when he came in he gave the other lads waiting for us in the car a load of shit, screaming and shouting at them and they hadn't a clue what was going on. So be wary and apologise if you do find yourself in the wrong.

that is all

Know a local... ;)

That way you can access limitless supplies of turf from the local's own plot as well as borrowing items such as toasters, TV's etc. Better if the local isn't home at New Years.

Buy a Thermarest and a good sleeping bag

Glenbeigh can get very cold (One year, a wet t-shirt froze to the inside of window pane - in fact, a TCD captain gobbed on the wall, classy fella that he was, and that froze too). With a Thermarest and good sleeping bag, you never had to worry about being on the committee, shagging committee, being the only one in possession of the hash in order to get a bed. You'll be happy as Larry no matter what happens. I'd recommend the Basecamp Luxury model.

Bonus suggestion
- If you can stretch to it, buy and bring two Thermarests. There'll be some cracking looking, non paddler of mate of a UCD Commerce fresher who's sleeping on a close cell foam mat and Dunnes Stores sleeping bag who'll be surprisingly accommodating with the thought of a comfortable night on a decent mattress ahead of her.

Bring a Locksmith - self explanatory really

Freshers - Get out on the water every day

If there's rain, it'll be likely that the leaders will be off on big rivers every day and if there's no rain, they'll be very very drunk. Don't waste the week. If there's surf, get out there. If there's only small waves, go out anyway in a play boat or squirt - something you wouldn't normally paddle. Practice your rolling. Salt water is more buoyant than fresh water so it will be marginally easier to get your technique right.

Bonus suggestion - pour boiling water in your booties before you head out.

Finally, and most importantly

Respect the village and the locals

Don't think that because you spend some cash in Glenbeigh that this gives you the right to behave like it cvnt - it doesn't. Glenbeigh is a tourist village and people come there to spend money all year round, most, a hell of a lot more than the paddlers so bed nice - ALL THE TIME.

PS - Jacks in Cromane

If you've got a spare €100 to spend on dinner, I can thoroughly recommend Jacks in Cromane but to book first.. :D

No doubt a whole bunch of you will be heading south for some paddling and new years festivities. So I've revived this thread (and merged another). For some it might be their first time. Please post any tips or advice you have for people heading down that way.

And as always, if you have the time and the knowledge please post a river guide. I'll see ye there!.

Hey guys, just a few quick notes on some rivers,

The Caraghbeg has some very large oak trees, at least 4, blocking it so afraid its unrunnable at the moment. Though if a few chainsaws turned up we might be able to shift them.

Other than that please park responsibly, farmers may well need to get into their fields over the new year so don't block gates or access roads while you are on the rivers.

There are no atms in Glenbeigh at the moment so if you need cash for the odd pint, kilorglin is the last stop. You can buy food, petrol etc. with laser though

Enjoy.

I'm seriously considering a pilgrimage to Glenbeigh this year and who knows I might even add the survivors guide*.

Any other OFB's thinking of heading down?

*at some point in the next 10 years
