There is a new fish counter on the Dunkellin River in Galway. It will be dangerous in the event of a capsize in high water and will result in a head injury if not a spinal one, as there are two mass concrete walls with sharp edges, aligned in the direction of river flow in the stopper. These walls are approx 30cm below the surface just in front of the wave.
Features such as these are likely to become more common in the future as the Water Directive begins to be implemented across the different catchment basins. It would be worth trying to be involved in some kind of consultation with the fisheries boards / EPA and other bodies who will be constructing these features. While presently we may regard them as hazards, a little redesign would reduce / eliminate the hazard, but also could result in them having some recreation / play potential. There is little likelyhood of kayakers getting permission to dump quantities of concrete in rivers and build features, so a concillatory approach in redesign could be worth an attempt!

Re: Fish Counters
You might edit the topic title to reflect the fact that it's a river warning, as people may skip over it otherwise.
