Re: Could this finially be what we are waiting for...
May be, as the rain radar forecast's are getting better, if you can get online real time rain fall gauge data, we have found in Devon over in the UK, conditions a lot easier to predict. Plus on most rain gauges, the time lag between when the rain fall hit the earth and the river is ready to go is around 4-6 hours, so enough time to sort your gear out, clear your desk and head to the hills. Here is a site that you can get recent historical data, for example Cork City's rainfall in the last 48 hours
I am sure there are a number of online real time rainfall gauges in Ireland, and with a little local knowledge, rather than following the forecast you can make an informed decision on where the rain has fallen and whether it is enough!!

Simon,
We have some online gauges at the moment which can provide real time data, sadly they all seem to be out of operation so its back to the good old days of rain fall radars combined with a phone book of folks living in the areas.
Ah for the perfect world where we would have live gauges on every river, rivers which are full of water that is!
