Limerick County Council has estimated the cost of the clean-up following a pollution incident in west Limerick last January will exceed €500,000.

Up 1,500 homes were left without water after the River Deel was polluted after up to 2,000 litres of oil seeped into the river.

The public water supply for the area affected was shut down for over two weeks as the council cleaned up the oil spill.

A number of businesses in the area were also affected.

The council had to provide water tankers for people in the affected area.

Today a spokesman from the council said that the costs were incurred through the clean-up process and the supply of emergency water supply.

He added that the council intends to re-coup the cost and is in ongoing discussions with a company in the west Limerick area in relation to the incident.
