A specific section for this is lacking on this site, I think it might be a welcome addition, what say ye?

We could have it as a text box where people write in their own description, or we could have a set number of choices/types.

I think it would be an excellent addition. I wonder coulde you do it by drop down?
pool/drop
short rapids
some continuous rapids
continuous from start to finish

Or would that cover it - I'm sure there are other suggestions for character types??

Just recently revisiting some discussions and doing some much needed updates to the site. I'd love to hear more suggestions of character types.

Also, I want to archive a discussion between myself and Graham Clark on grading in the comment section of the Seanafaurrachain River. The comments below guides are about to be removed as I'm changing the river pages layout and it would be a shame to just delete them (if there was any useful information in comments, I've added that to the guides).

I was just having a wee ponder about the bit I rated as grade VI. I think that a more accurate representation of the rapid that I gave this grade to would be to use the Addison scale, which defines a grade using the criteria of difficulty, danger, and exposure. I've been using this system for a number of years and find it effective. Goggle the Addison Scale if your not sure what it is. So based on that grading I would give the aforementioned rapid the following grade: IV.5(b). As in the move required is only of the grade IV variety, you'll probably break your back though, and your more than a couple of hours away from getting to a hospital.

This was an email I sent a few months ago to someone who suggested something similar:

I get your point about the current grading system, but I agreed and disagree with you at the same time. I've had this same debate with my mates a good few months back when I was developing the idea for the site.

We could add this feature, however it is more complicated. That would cause problems because if some people don't understand the system, that means they wont be submitting good information and also might not use it. And if the users don't understand they will be leaving with the wrong idea. Yes a key to the letters would solve this, but its making something more complicated than it needs to be.

I have been paddling for a good few years now, in Ireland and abroad and I have never heard anyone refer to a feature as been a grade 4e or anything like that. The idea of the grading system is to give a rough idea. The grading system in the book try's to narrow this down, and I think that this greater accuracy is needless.

If I was going to change the grading system to http://www.chrisj.winisp.net/articles/addison.htm But this would fail for the reasons I mentioned above. It would be simple to implement and it would be effective, but the problem is that the old grading system is embedded in people minds; the big point is that the current system is simple and it works.

Anyway sorry about the huge reply, but your question/request is a valid one and I wanted to give a good response.

Cheers for the input,
Stay safe and I'll see you on the water,

Think I may have explained myself a bit poorly before. I'm not suggesting you change the grading system on the site. 'Tis grand the way it is.I just wanted to be as clear as possible about the nature of that one particular rapid I was describing.I felt a little uncomfortable slapping it with the grade VI tag. Anywho, as someone once told me - "on the day it's either grade yes or grade no". Chat to you soon.
