Re: Low brace turns, pointless?
Some interesting points all round. In response to a few, because I'm knackered after an awesome weekend paddling at the Bitches in Wales: StealT wrote: Is this exciting, dynamic, progressive and wonderful turning technique new? Really all that new? No. That's my point. The best paddlers in the world...

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?
Here we go. Steve Fisher epitomises the dynamic style. Ten years ago, I learnt how to paddle dynamically from paddling with him and Nico Chassing. Does anyone see a low brace turn or bow rudder turn in this clip? Anything other ...

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?
Nice vid. In the film, if you look closely you will see that Eoin is using a compound bow rudder, something we indeed learned from slalom and have been coaching for the past few years now( visible at 0:33, 1:19, 2:00, 3:00 etc). Namely a compound stroke of a forward stroke into a bow draw. Rob Coffe...

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?
Mike Jones: The issue of the usefulness of the bow rudder to a person on a river for the first 4 or 5 trips is a long way from there first time in norway or on the zambezi. I disagree good technique is good technique whether it is your first class 4 river in Ireland or abroad. This is the problem w...

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?
From Ali Donald: Fair play for getting the ball rolling with this- its overdue as far as I can see. Since being away for a while and coming back to instruction here, its really obvious to me how the current ww syllabii have been left behind by developments in current paddling. I have watched "tradit...

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?
I've just had a cursory glace at the European Paddle Pass and while the concept is good and there is some progress, some of the key concepts are simply wrong. This is probably due to the fact that no active coach who is involved in modern delivery on class 4-5 whitewater has been involved with the E...

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?
Interesting points there. bow-rudder is a useful stroke in white water that isn't too powerful or when you're dropping into an eddy after flaring off a rock Agreed. Compound strokes of forward strokes into a bow draw or stern draw can be incredibly useful. However, the traditional bow rudder hanging...

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?
by "dynamic style ie forward paddling on the inside of the turn" do you mean forward paddling while carving the direction you want Yes. I mean instead of putting in redundant turning strokes ie low brace/ bow rudder, put in powerful forward stokes. This will retain your speed through the turn, henc...

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?
Low brace turns, pointless? Good question. Yes, the low brace turn is completely and utterly pointless, and should not be thought to beginners as it leads to bad technique. Likewise the traditional bow rudder as on the ICU level 4 syllabus is completely pointless. It works ok on low water on the An...
