Thanks to Seanie for pointing out that the level can still be roughly read by using the two metal rings that used to hold the gauge in place.
The lower ring is at about 1.0, while the higher one is at about 1.5.

River Information - on the River
A bunch of us are just back from an interesting two weeks variously in France, Italy and Slovenia. What struck me was the amount of information available at the river and on the river for paddlers – river maps at the accesses noting lengths of sections broken down into different grades, advised in...

The production values are great, definitely. Good movie to show to a non-kayaker.

Such over-hyped Hollywood porn. And he doesn't do a great job of it (not that I would).

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?
Good point. In moments of panic (argh, I'm going upside-down) people revert to what their most automatic reaction is.

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?
Kim, Nope, Ross from Galway. I misunderstood your point earlier and agree with what you're saying about sitting on the eddy line being quite silly. On your second point: Yes, if I was leading I would prefer to 'have the eddy to myself' as it were, with the rest of the group hugging the bank and not ...

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?
Kim, presumably if you're in the eddy on your own, feel free to put your boat where you'd like. However, the eddy line will be most narrow at the top of the eddy and so to spend the least amount of time possible on it, it would make sense to hit it high. I don't think it makes much sense in a group ...

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?
Whoa! So much sense in one thread! Please do have that chat with the ICU. I've seen so many beginners taught the ridiculous sweep-edge-brace combo that leaves them utterly unprepared for anything other than the gentlest white water. Surely edge control and dynamic, active paddle strokes are the way ...

Pretty crazy. I saw this in the Irish Times yesterday too. Apparently there was a lot of mud contributing the problem due to land sliding into the river upstream.

Re: Gauge down on the Boluisce
I emailed the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland to see if they might know who's responsibility the gauge is… Hello, I am a paddler with NUI Galway Kayak Club and it has been recently noticed that the gauge on the Boluisce River in Spiddal, Co. Galway has been damaged due to either vandalism ...
