Wicklow Paddling post-floods

Did anyone paddle in Wicklow today? We had planned to take a group down the Avonmore from Rathdrum to the Meetings today but cancelled it due to the floods. Going to give it another shot tomorrow, has anyone any info on access, levels, hazards that have appeared over the last 24hrs that we should lo...

Re: Sweet Strutters, are they solid?

I know the last time I saw a Strutter in the sops it had a warning on it saying it was not suitable for Grade 4 or above. This could be the reason more people have gone for Rockers. I know my Strutter didn't have that warning on it when I bought it 4ish years ago.

Re: Beginner

I think Lir Canoe Club are based around there. They are probably listed in the link above.

Re: The Glens Is up (6 beeps)

Hey I'm based in Ennis and can't find anyone who's free to run the Glens this evening! If anyone's heading out there and has room in the group for one more could you post here or give me a buzz (087-2275070). Will have space in my car too if necessary.

Happy Paddling

Re: Boluisce Running Tmr (Monday)

There was no water on it yesterday evening. It would have been around 0.4 on the guage. The metal loop at the 1.0 mark is gone so now there is just one at the 1.5 mark and another around the 0.5 mark.

Re: River Information - on the River

But I would be interested to see what what type of signs you are on about, how do they describe the rapid etc. On the Durance there was a sign on a cliff just above water level warning of undercut rock and to stay away. It looked just like a triangular road sign with a picture of an undercut. Most ...

Re: Boluisce "Top Drop" Grade

With regard to River Grades in general, I'm reading the Guidebook to the South Alps at the moment and it uses the traditional 1 - 6 grading with the addition of a + and - to show if it is, say, a hard grade 3 (3+) or an easy grade 4 (4-) for example. I think this gives a lot more clarity. It also ca...

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?

I don't think anyone is saying that the Low Brace itself is useless, far from it. Its way better than people I see surfing in a hole high bracing for support or worse sculling lying back on their backdeck. The low brace keeps your body up in a much more active position and should always be encourage...

Rolling is on the new EPP Level 3 syllabus.

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?

I found a similar (very long) thread on UKRGB on the same subject. Lots of differing opinions but this post stood out: I looked in the BCU Handbook to see what it had to say about the matter, I couldn't help noticing Chapter 23, Whitewater Kayaking, page 300, which talks about breaking in and out. I...

Re: Low brace turns, pointless?

I presume its a learning stroke (similar to the "simple" draw stroke), as in just for beginners who haven't really got their balance up to scratch and would maybe lean too far downstream with a Bow Rudder. I don't know anyone who actually uses it once they learn a bow rudder.
